Program description:

Upon completion of this program the student shall be able to:

  • Describe the potential hazards that vacant properties pose to firefighters.
  • Describe the factors that should be included during the size-up of a fire involving a vacant/abandoned building.
  • Describe the potential life safety hazards that vacant/abandoned buildings pose.
  • Describe methods to reduce the probabilities that a vacant/abandoned building will be occupied in the event of a fire.
  • Describe firefighting operations in vacant/abandoned buildings where there is a known life hazard verses one with no known life hazard.
  • Describe the potential hazards of exterior firefighting operations at vacant/abandoned buildings.
  • Describe how information gathered for a pre-plan or during a building evaluation of a vacant or abandoned building can be used to increase firefighter safety.
